![]() ![]() I describe the puddle as brown and oil colered but this may be because whatever it was took the pain right off a metal magazine. There wasn't a big puddle like in the rifle safe but there was clear evidence the stuff had left water in the safe. I also looked under the second little tub and there were water drops underneath it. ![]() I don't have any scientific knowledge of how this product works, and I don't know if this is what actually caused the problem but I can't find anything else in the safe that could have caused the puddle. This is also why I don't want to completely point the finger at the product. If I had been smart I would have put the thing in a bowl, but I honestly thought that just by eye balling it periodically I could keep track on how well it worked. There are slits down the side of the container. If I'm putting what happened correctly here, the moisture absorbent actually acted like a "magnet." When the rain came it pulled the moisture out of the air and pulled it in to the DampRid container. It was only during the last few weeks that we had significant rainstorms. I apologize for the length of this post, but given the importance of firearms as preps, this is an important topic if the DampRid itself is actually the source of what drew so much liquid into my gun safe.Įven though I had checked it several times since I put it in, the weather has been basically dry here. The bottle was also on the other side of the shelf and completely away from the puddle, and it wasn't remotely big enough to create the puddle. Non of the brown wet stuff was even on it so I 100% know this was not the source of the wet stuff. I found one empty plastic bottle that you get when you buy a mosin-nagant or AK, but it came empty and was still completely empty. I thought originally that I must have knocked over a bottle of solvent or oil, but there wasn't anything there. Very fortunately all my best rifles and shotguns were completely untouched. A little bit had managed to drip into the bag, unfortunately right in the breach, but I think I found it in time to get it cleaned up and prevent damage. I'd only picked it up maybe a month ago so it was a virgin and hadn't made it to the range yet. I was lucky in that it was mostly contained to the shelf, and the one firearm that it had significantly dripped down onto was still wrapped in the plastic bag it came in. On the top shelf where I had the little tub there was an light brown oil colored puddle. There wasn't any noticable problem in the handgun safe, but when I got to the rifle safe OMG I almost had a heart attack. I had a day free so I thought it'd be a good day to sort and organize the ammo and firemarms. I opened my handgun and rifle safes yesterday. But I also don't want to not mention it in case it is.) I've made more storage screw ups than probably anybody on the planet, so I don't want to disparage a product when maybe it isn't what caused the problem I found. (I also need to stress that I do not know for 100% sure that this product is the culprit of what I ended up finding. I checked on them a few times and there was never an issue. I figured the little tubs could go one each in the hand gun and rifle safes. They had lots of different versions of it, but I settled on the little tubs instead of the sachet packets. ![]() He guided me to a product called DampRid. I know it is not smart to discuss preps, but in talking to hardware guys, especially older ones, I've always learned a lot, so I specifically told the guy I was looking for a moisture protector to put in a gun safe. I went to the hardware store and asked if they had anything that soaked up extra moisture. But I decided to err on the side of caution. I've read that you can just store guns and ammo in the closet and so long as your gun safe is dry and secure you are good to go. It's been very valuable to read about other people's experiences because sometimes their mistakes could just as easily been my mistakes, and often they were. I am NOT a scientist, so I won't point the finger here blindly, but since many here share the concern of keeping their preps properly preserved, I need to raise a question/concern about a "protector" that might have actually just done more harm than good. Warning - I think my moisture "protector" almost destroyed my rifle cabinet and guns!
